THOMAS BARRIE ARCHITECT
Thomas Barrie, FAIA teaches and practices in Raleigh, NC. Tom is Professor of Architecture at the School of Architecture, NC State University, where he teaches design studios focused on home and housing design and teaches history and theory courses and seminars. The embodied experience of architecture, its capacity to connect us with our surroundings, others, and ourselves, and its potential to materialize our highest ideals, guides his approach to design. His education in the modernist tradition and research interests in sacred architecture frame his design philosophy, which focuses on sensitive siting, path sequences, geometry and proportion, the authentic use of materials, and sustainable practices. Tom believes that well considered, comprehensively designed, and skillfully crafted architecture has the capacity to expand and enrich our lives. His design process is collaborative, inventive and dedicated to discovering the very best and most cost-effective solutions for his client’s.
Tom is a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects, an Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture Distinguished Professor, and the recipient of a number of design awards.
